Broken Arrow administrator to be named superintendent at Oologah-Talala

OOLOGAH — Longtime Broken Arrow Public Schools administrator Rob Armstrong will be named new superintendent at the Oologah-Talala district.

The O-T school board last Thursday voted unanimously to offer the position to Armstrong, executive director of secondary schools at Broken Arrow, an O-T spokeswoman said. The move board is expected to be OK’d Monday at a regular school board meeting.

Armstrong, 44, will succeed Rick Thomas, who will become the superintendent at Skiatook Public Schools on July 1.

“I’m looking forward to working with the staff, students, and communities there in celebrating the past and creating a future that provides hope and opportunities for everyone,” Armstrong said in a prepared statement. “I’ll learn more from them than they do from me.”

A 1984 graduate of BAHS, he began his teaching and coaching career in the district in 1989 at Childers Middle School and was named assistant principal three years later. After serving as principal at Centennial Middle School and at Senior High School, Armstrong became the Executive Director of Secondary Schools.

“My involvement in education here has been a mission of service,” Armstrong said in a news release. “Whether it was teaching, coaching, or leading others, I looked for ways to motivate and inspire others to be their very best.”

He has a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in education from Northeastern State University.

Jarod Mendenhall is BAPS superintendent.

“He has dedicated his life to education, and his positive impact will be seen in Oologah just as we have seen it here in Broken Arrow,” Mendenhall said in a prepared statement. “School districts of all sizes are becoming much better at collaborating, and I know those of us who have had the privilege of working with Rob will continue to do so, even if he will be wearing blue and gold instead of black and gold.”
