ELECTROLYSIS:

A chemical process in which +ve and -ve ions of electrolytes are moving towards cathode and anode respectively on the passage_ of electric current is called Electrolysis”.

FORMATION OF SOLUTION:

First of all solution of CuCl2 is prepared by mixing it with water so that CuCl2 so that dissociate into Cu+ and Cl- ions as shown in the equation.

CuCl2 <=========> Cu+ + 2Cl-

 

CONSTRUCTION -OF ELECTROLYTIC CELL:

An electrolytic cell consist of a container filled with an electrolyte solution. For the passage of electric current two metallic plates are dipped in the solution. The plate attached with +ve terminal of battery is called anode while the plate attached with –ve terminal of battery is called cathode. The flowing current is identified by a galvanometer or electrical bulb as shown in the figure.

REACTION AT CATHODE:

On the passage of electric current Cu* ions are moving toward cathode, gain two electrons and become Cu atom deposited at the surface of cathode.

Cu+2 + 2e- ————–> Cuº

 

REACTION AT ANODE:

Similarly Cl- ions are moving toward anode, lose an electron and become Cl atoms which further converted into Cl gas.

2Cl- ————–> Cl2+2e-

OVER ALL REACTION:

Cu+2 + 2e- ————–> Cuº
2Cl- -2e- ————–> Cl2

Cu+2 + 2cl- ————–> Cuº + Cl2
