PRESSURE VOLUME WORK: (PV – Work)

INTRODUCTION:

The representation of work done by piston in terms of pressure and volume is known as “PRESSURE VOLUME WORK”.

 

Consideration

Consider a system of gas present in a container having moveable piston when “q” amount of Heat Energy is provided to the system. Its internal energy increases from

“E1 to E2” by using this energy gas expands so that piston covered a distance “∆h” so that “∆W” work is done by piston and its volume increases from “V1” to “V2” as shown in the figure.

 

Now according to 1st law of thermodynamics

q = ∆e + ∆W

 

DERIVATION

Since ∆W = F. ∆h ……. 1

P = F/A

PA = F

By putting the value of F in equation (l)

∆W = F. ∆h

∆W = F. ∆h ……. 2

 

Now as we know that

V = l x b x h

Here 1 x b =A

 

So

∆V = A∆h

Therefore by substituting the value of “A∆h” in eq.(2)

∆W = p∆V

Now 1st law of thermodynamics becomes

q = ∆E + p∆V
