PROPERTIES OF CATHODE RAYS:
Following are the main properties of cathode rays:
i. Cathode rays move in a straight line and produces shadow of the object placed in its path.
ii. Cathode rays are moving towards anode, so -ve in nature.
iii. The motion of cathode rays can be effect by electrical and magnetic field.
iv. These rotate small pin wheel placed in the path, so they can exert mechanical pressure.
v. The emission of cathode rays is independent of material of cathode and gas present inside the tube.
vi. The e/m ratio of cathode rays is same as electron i.e. 1.7×10¹¹ c/kg, determined by J. J. Thomson.
