QUANTUM NUMBERS:

The set of numbers which completely explain the exact position of electron in any atom are called Quantum numbers.

Following are the types of Quantum numbers.

 

Principle Quantum Number:

It is the number which specifies the size of orbit in which electron is present, denoted by “n”

 

n =1 _____K

n = 2_____L

n = 3_____M

 

Greater the value of ‘n’, greater the size of orbit.

 

Azimuthal Quantum Number:

It is the number which indicates the shape of an orbital, denoted by “l”. The value of “l” can be determined by

 

l = 0 ____ to ____ (n-1)

 

Here n is principle quantum number

 

For,

n = 1 ; l = 0____ (n-1) -> l = 0 ___ s orbital

n = 2 ; l = 0____ (n-1) -> l = 0, 1 ___ s, p orbital

Magnetic Quantum Number

It is used to described by the orientation of orbital in magnetic field, denoted by ‘m’

 

m = –l ___ too ___ +1

for

l = 1 __ p orbital

m = -1___ 0 ____ +1

m = -1, 0, +1 means (Px , Py, Pz)

 

Spin Quantum Number:

It is the number which explains the spin of electron. It is denoted by ‘SI

For clockwise spin + ½

For anti clockwise spin – ½
