Significant Figures:

“All the reliable digits present in a number with importance or significance are called ‘Significant Figures’.

Rules for determining Significant Figure:

1.            For all values either decimal or non-decimal, all non zero figures are significant e.g.

1347 ——–>   4 significant fig

2543 ——–>  4 significant fig

2.            For non-decimal values zero before or after non-zero are non significant e.g.

440 ,       044

2 S.F       2 SF

3.            For non decimal values zero present between non-zero are always significant,

e.g.        404 ——–>   S.F = 3

4.            in decimal values greater than 1 all zero are significant e.g. 1.04020 ——–> S.F 6

5.            In decimal value less than 1 same rule is applied for zero as non-decimal value.

0.04020 ——–>   S.F = 3
