STANDARD HYDROGEN ELECTRODE (REFERENCE ELECTRODE)

It is not possible to determine the electrode potential of metal directly. For this purpose, hydrogen is used as a reference electrode to observe standard electrode of hydrogen is also called standard hydrogen electrode.

A hydrogen electrode consists of a platinum plate immersed in 1M solution of sulphuric acid. Platinum plate absorbs H2 on its surface at 1 atom at 25°C.
