ISLAMABAD: In keeping with the policy of promoting extra-curricular activities, students of National University of Science and Technology (NUST), specifically NUST Business School in collaboration with NUST Headquarters organised one of the biggest events in twin city debating circuit – NUMUN 2012.

Model United Nations (MUNs) conferences have been around for a long time. A simulation of the actual international body, MUNs aim to create awareness amongst students, inculcate an understanding of the basics of conflicts solving, polish their speaking skills and to hone their leadership qualities. Delegates attending these conferences are encouraged to research the stances of different countries on a variety of topics and to defend those respective points of views. NUMUN 2012 promises to bring this simulation conference to Islamabad in a much grander manner than ever witnessed before.

On Education: Military Children Outdo Public School Students on NAEP Tests



CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The results are now public from the 2011 federal testing program known as NAEP, the National Assessment of Educational Progress. And once again, schools on the nation’s military bases have outperformed public schools on both reading and math tests for fourth and eighth graders.
At the military base schools, 39 percent of fourth graders were scored as proficient in reading, compared with 32 percent of all public school students.

QUETTA A delegation of Balochistan Residential College Loralai students called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Ahmed Chaudhry at Supreme Court on Tuesday. Students of research from and teaching departments must derive hypothesis from Quran VC




SARGODHA – Students of research from all teaching departments must derive their hypothesis from Quran, said University of Sargodha (UOS) Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Akram Chaudhry. He was addressing a Hifz Conference which was held in honour of students from all departments who had got admission on the basis of Hifz-e-Quran.
He said that it is only the Holy Quran which is studied and read regularly, frequently in maximum number as compared to other religious books in the world. He further said that it covers all fields of human life including Botany, Geology and Zoology.

Punjab University students, staff and teachers participated in rally



LAHORE:Thousands of Punjab University students, staff and teachers participated in a rally on Wednesday condemning the Nato attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.The protesters gathered at the Institute of Business Administration in the morning and then marched behind Vice Chancellor Prof Mujahid Kamran though the campus. The enthusiastic participants shouted slogans and carried banners and placards condemning the “barbaric” attack, backing the armed forces and paying tribute to the fallen soldiers.Addressing the rally, Prof Kamran said the “unprovoked attack” should be considered an act of war. He said he had never seen the nation so angry.

Forman Christian College holds 147th convocation outstanding students awarded



LAHORE: The Forman Christian College (FCC) held its 147th convocation at the campus on Saturday, the chief guest of the event being FCC patron and Punjab Governor Sardar Muhammad Latif Khosa.
The convocation was the ninth since the FCC became a chartered university in 2004. Degrees were conferred to 174 students on the convocation, among which 51 were of BA Honours, 72 of BSc Honours, 8 of BSc Honours Business, 10 of BSc Honours Computer Science, 9 of MAS Economics, 10 of MPhil Biotechnology, 4 of MPhil Chemistry, and 10 of PG Advanced Diploma in English Language Teaching.
Awards were also distributed to Intermediate students who had produced outstanding results in the board exams. The Maulana Syed Farzand Ali Medal for securing the highest marks in Arts/Humanities was awarded to Muhammad Safi Aslam, The Allama Inayatullah al-Mashriqi Medal for first position in General Science went to Abrar Aslam, Muhammad Rafay Khan Niazi won the Dr K C Chaterjee Medal for the highest score in Pre-Medical group, and Mian Muhammad Waqas received the Dr M I D Chugtai Medal for securing the first position in Intermediate Pre-Engineering. Also, Dr Lubna Amir from the Department of Chemistry received the Outstanding College Teacher Award.
An honourary doctorate was conferred on Anwar Pervez. Anwar migrated to the UK in 1952 and from humble origins built up Bestway, one of the largest food wholesalers in the UK. Despite the success, he has not forgotten his roots and has worked tirelessly to improve conditions in Pakistan through philanthropy and business development.
Khosa said that the four-year BS programme was a pace setter in the history of higher education in the Pakistan. He said that educational institutions had to encourage the students to explore and research new fields that were of their interest. He concluded by emphasising on the importance of education in creating a peaceful, tranquil and tolerant society. At the end of the convocation address, the governor was also presented with a college plaque by the rector.
Separately, the rector summarised the progress the university had made since its denationalisation. The student body had increased by 94 percent, the faculty by 86 percent of which 50 percent held PhD degrees. In addition to the new degree programmes, the rector highlighted the renovation of existing buildings and construction of two new buildings.

The visitors were briefed about the developmental activities of Pesco. Vice Chancellor University of Engineering & Technology Peshawar Professor Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani & CEO Pesco visited the stalls and appreciated the efforts by the students.Pesco stall was arranged in the supervision of Chief Engineer Pesco Operation Abdul Latif Khan in which people were briefed about transformers, meters, testing system and other instruments, and material used in Pesco distribution system and Developmental activities of Pesco. Pesco displayed banners highlighting Customer Service Centers phone numbers and the negative impact of illegal use of electricity. In Pesco stall some complaints were also redressed. Students criticise Allama Iqbal Open University exam schedule



PESHAWAR Many students of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) appearing in examination for Primary School Teacher (PST) are in trouble as their papers are scheduled in different examination centres.

Students of AIOU, particularly the female ones, complained to this correspondent on Monday that for the first time their examinations were conducted in different halls located at different places. They also criticised the AIOU administration for poor arrangements at the examination centres.
