In 1886 a scientist named “Goldstein” repeated discharge tube experiment by some modifications. He used perforated cathode and observed that some radiations are collected behind cathode by passing the perforated cathode. These radiations found to be positive rays known as “Canal Rays” consist of atoms and ions of various gases present in the tube. The positive charge is either equal to charge of electron or its integral multiple.

The e/m ratio of positive rays is depending upon the gas present inside the tube, while these are formed due to ionization of gases inside the tube.

The lightest particle is found when hydrogen is present as electrolyte which is 1836 times greater in mass as the electron called “Proton”.
